Why the crabs died
chuvaness
I was thinking why the crabs died.
All this time I was thinking the weather was cool because my bedroom is always cool. So I thought it would be safe to leave the aquarium on the deck. But no.
After the crabs died, I started hearing people say it was hot outside. Wha??? I never felt it.
Is it really hot outside?
My hairstylist who does home service confirmed it. She said it was hot outside and very hot in other houses in our village, but it is really cool in our house. And I figured it out. It must be our roof deck, which I covered in grass upon the suggestion of a reader, when I was wondering what to do up there.

Our roof deck used to be concrete and would be scorching hot especially during summer. Like you couldn't put your bare palm on it and not get burnt. This translated to heat within our house, which felt like an oven during summer.
Our two-tonner aircon wasn't strong enough to cool our bedroom, not even with the assist of a ceiling fan.
I thought about building a tent over our room among other things. I even tried watering the roof, but our water bill went up. And then Rona suggested an eco-garden.

Twas not easy. First, you have to waterproof your roof before putting on the soil and the grass. Otherwise, you will have crazy leaks within your house!
You have to consult a professional landscaper, because if you get an ordinary gardener, which we did in the beginning, he might put the cheapest soil that is not thick enough, etc.

Here's what our roof deck looks like today. This is on top of our living room, which is now habitable, even in summer.

This is me using Bayantel Wireless Landline. Yes it works up there!
(and my brother had his roof painted)

Our house has been cooler by a few degrees. Our aircon doesn't have to work double time during summer and doesn't conk out anymore.
I can't say our electric bill has gone down because Meralco continues to increase their price even though we have reduced consumption.
But I can say it has all been worth it—for the environment and for our sanity.

wow! didn't know grass absorbs heat pala? and you have extra space now for playing, reading... does the grass need to be watered everyday?

i like the bayantel pic. you look like a teenager there.

yes it has to be watered everyday except when it rains :)

they favor rooftop gardens in Japan for it's cooling effect especially on commercial buildings that is if its not already used as a soccer "field". your boys would probably like the soccer field idea too

what a fantastic idea to put grass on your roof deck! it looks so inviting!

but watering bermuda grass everyday must jack up your water bill, yes?

have you heard about the white roof movement? the idea is to paint your roof white, thus making them reflect the heat back onto the atmosphere instead of absorbing it and distributing it to the rooms below. I've tried it on my YERO roof, and I have to say the results have been quite dramatic. i stopped using my AC altogether during the day.

and i agree, the picture of you using the bayantel on the soft looking grass can be used in an ad :D ahahah!

cheers, CZVS. i LOVE your blog.

the white roof movement sounds good! we should promote that. thank you!

Ahhh sana talaga lahat ng bahay sa Pilipinas ganyan. Para naman iwas na sobrang init, environment-friendly pa.

YOUR.ROOF.IS.SO.COOL!

all i can say about ur roof garden is WOW!.can i grab some of the pics and post them on my fb? isu-suggest ko lang sa family and friends ko..thanks so much for inspiring..i'm an avid fan..

ayan.. pwede na tayo mag croquet. :)

your green roof is so good! you practically just had a new living area built in. perfect NYE party venue. how cool is that?!?!

Hi! Can you recommend your professional landscaper? I'm not not happy with my garden. I suspect, the landscaper I got put cheap garden soil kasi after just 1 year eroded na :(

I'm thinking of painting our roof white. Now kasi it's brown. During high noon, parang ang init even with the high ceilings & thick bamboo outside.

paint it white please! i have to look for the clip on Al Gore's "Inconvenient Truth" which explains why white is needed.

i was thinking of leaving you a message regarding your "green roof" because I wanted to have the same thing done with our house. I was going to ask for more details on how it was made and the do's and dont's of the process.

i was browsing my google reader and saw this now. haha!

must suggest that white roof idea to my mom...

How long did it take for your roof to be "greened"? :)

tagal, but only because we didn't know about the waterproofing. we had a leak in our house. had to remove the grass, waterproof and lay it on again. Otherwise, it should've been faster

your Bayantel picture is lovely and can be a very nice picture for their ad.

Your roof reminds me of this children's book, The Curious Garden (by Peter Brown). It's a good read for little kids so they would be more aware of environmental issues and how to help.

With the hot weather there you can generate so much solar energy to power your house.. Your electric bill will be a lot less lower..

yup! i should've done that when we constructed

wat if it rains, soil will absorb water tapos pano kung mapuno un deck ng tubig + soil w/c will turn into mud, and mud is heavy...hindi ba babagsak un deck?? does it have a special drainage system?

walang mud! our roofdeck survived Ondoy and Pepeng looked much greener after that. yes meron drainage of course.

pang picnic during the summer!

Wow Ms. C! I remember seeing that last photo before in your lj but I had NO IDEA that was your roof deck. It's gorgeous!

The Puppy and the Voido rocking chair from Magis? Cool!

yes, from Dimensione :)

Whoohoo! I'm so happy for you. It looks great especially with the outdoor furniture...looks more fasyon :)

I like it. It's so green and very good use of space. Just wondering, how much is a typical electric bill in the summer? Here in LA, for the past few years, we've had really super hot summers that our A/C is on practically all day. We have it on automode, but then because it's so hot that it's on all day and all night. At one point, our bill was over $500 - it was so painful to pay for it. Just wondering what a typical Meralco bill would cost.

our bill is the same, but ours is not typical. we got a higher rate when we built our house cause it's modern. even though we run two aircons at night only and one aircon when the baby is napping in the afternoon. two of those aircons are window type, 2 horsepower only.

That's a very, very nice picture of you, Cecile!

I love this idea! :) i wish i lived in a single-detached house :) but i am lucky enough to live in a low rise condo that has enough "green" to decrease the heat. :)

mother earth is very proud of you!

thank you :)
