The journey from my bed to Bo's Coffee at the Fort took two hours, because I had to blowdry my hair and pick up my friend Gerome from Salcedo.
The rainy weather was freezing. I regret having left my fleece hoodie at home.
When we got there, Sen. Villar was already speaking to the bloggers. To my right was Ganns Deen who was receiving questions by chat, and to the left of the Senator was Noemi Dado who recorded the interview on her Mac. For once I felt so low-tech next to them.

You can see how cold it was, look at the frosted windows. All the while I was wishing I had worn Fall/Winter collection.

I kind of know Sen. Villar's background, having seen his interview with Boy Abunda.
I admire his rags to riches story. He came from the shanties of Tondo and has become one of the country's wealthiest men—all from hard work, persistence and a great entrepreneurial spirit he wants to imbibe in all Filipinos.
Here's the 15-minute interview shown in five parts. The first two reels I thought were cheesy but the last three made me cry.
I've met his wife and children who especially left the impression of being grounded, idealistic and above all, normal.
Senator Villar covered a range of topics from environmental concerns to the RH bill, the C5 issue, to a love for Brothers Burger and, as a young boy, reading komiks from the neighborhood sari-sari store. Here's a guy who can talk about anything under the sun and can relate to the richest guy as well as the underdog, having been there, been that.

The reason for meeting up with bloggers is his interest in hooking up with the people who communicate with hundreds or thousands of readers daily just by typing on a keyboard. Funny enough, I was told he had to ask his staff what "chuvaness" means.
I said, it means "whatever", and I quote Gilda Cordero Fernando in her article:
Soon it was in Cecile Zamora’s blog. “Better than Inquirer,” someone said. “Everybody reads it.” Since I am a computer illit, it was left to my husband to access the site. So there he is, my old man with a cloud of white hair, hunched over the keyboard, eyebrows knit, trying to figure out where in heavensname “Chuvaness,” this very hip blog, can ever be found.
I told him “chuvaness” meant “Whatever.” But I wasn’t sure so I asked Manny Chaves. Manny said all he knew was what he had overheard at a party.
“Ano ba talaga ang chuva?”
“Pareho ng chever”
“E ano ang chever?”
“Same as chowa.” (Gee, thanks)
(Geez, I just realized I miss Gilda. Must visit her soon.)

with regards naman to politics, i dunno. I've become cynical about it na. Im a registered voter pero I'm having second thoughts of voting in the next elections. Parang wala naman nangyayari.:( Even if the voting system would be automated kaya pa rin nila mandaya. Pera pera lang yan.
I wonder who will be our Obama counterpart (no to Jeo-bama please).

my concern as a blogger is to get the young ones and others to get registered first and foremost regardless of who they're voting for.
p.s. I don't know about the "queen" part. we couldn't even win a simple online voting against Flesh Asia Daily, but that's done and over with :)

Senator Villar, bloggers, and voting

Wanna bet you and other bloggers will soon be inundated by other candidates' invites who are also interested in "hooking up with people who communicate with hundreds of thousands of readers daily"?--the power of new media nga naman. :) If you do get invited, hope you go so we get some sort of background on these candidates. Not that voters should rely solely on your blog on who to vote for, but at least, you'll give a different perspective from the usual.
And also, knowing you cover these things will be sure to encourage the kids to register and those who are getting jaded and cynical about the whole voting process to still go in there and be counted.
I realize that it's really easy to just throw up our hands and give up every time election comes around because what's the use, right? There's always rampant cheating. But if we don't keep trying to change things, what then? It really ticks me off when I hear or read people saying, they don't see the point of voting because nothing will ever change. It's precisely this attitude that will always keep the country in the muck. It's not enough to pay your taxes, work hard, and try to be as good a citizen as you possibly can. There has to be a concerted effort to change things. And voting--and voting the correct candidates--is the way to do it...Or we can all revolt--that's also a concerted effort--but do we really want to go there?
Managed to interview Senator Villar before and he really does come off as a very down to earth, grassroots kinda guy. But from your quote on the range of topics he talks about...hmmm, parang I heard na that--during the interview! Especially the one about reading komiks. It has a good spin to it though. I can't help wondering though if he's gonna use that story every time he gets interviewed from here on in!
Anyways, thanks for posting this. And sorry for the mini-rant. :)

re: villar -
i am 27 and plan to register to vote for the first time ever (was always out of the country during past elections). so definitely paying more attention to the presidentiables now and i'm glad some of them (like villar) are savvy enough to tap into the blogosphere. i hope this means that not only is the battlefield changing, but that the politicians are beginning to realize they have to change along with it. or am i being too idealistic? :P

i think we need an entreprenuer as president..economists and lawyers haven't worked.
he also has his feet on the ground. i cannot stand people who pretend to be one with the poor but has never been one. may as well admit it and be true than make padyak some trike.

We need to pray for our candidates and for the people to VOTE and take accountability for the country. Life is hard but by being apathetic, it makes it even much more challenging.

He ain't perfect. There are some things he advocates that I'm not exactly a fan of, pero pwede naman mamaya na ang mga yan. Given the major & more pressing issues, I feel like he's the intelligent choice. He's got my vote. I'm registering as an overseas voter pa nga. I have to call the consulate pa and find out how to register & vote from abroad kasi wa ko knows how. Effort, pero oks lang. :)
Anyway, I hope more overseas people will register and vote from abroad din, kung sino man ang kandidato nila. Kahit na mas konti kami outside Pinas, our votes still count diba. :)
