Coffee with Senator Villar

Woke up early today (7:30 am) to go to a bloggers' meet with Senator and "presidentiable" Manny Villar.
The journey from my bed to Bo's Coffee at the Fort took two hours, because I had to blowdry my hair and pick up my friend Gerome from Salcedo.
The rainy weather was freezing. I regret having left my fleece hoodie at home.
When we got there, Sen. Villar was already speaking to the bloggers. To my right was Ganns Deen who was receiving questions by chat, and to the left of the Senator was Noemi Dado who recorded the interview on her Mac. For once I felt so low-tech next to them.

You can see how cold it was, look at the frosted windows. All the while I was wishing I had worn Fall/Winter collection.

I kind of know Sen. Villar's background, having seen his interview with Boy Abunda.
I admire his rags to riches story. He came from the shanties of Tondo and has become one of the country's wealthiest men—all from hard work, persistence and a great entrepreneurial spirit he wants to imbibe in all Filipinos.

Here's the 15-minute interview shown in five parts. The first two reels I thought were cheesy but the last three made me cry.

I've met his wife and children who especially left the impression of being grounded, idealistic and above all, normal.
Senator Villar covered a range of topics from environmental concerns to the RH bill, the C5 issue, to a love for Brothers Burger and, as a young boy, reading komiks from the neighborhood sari-sari store. Here's a guy who can talk about anything under the sun and can relate to the richest guy as well as the underdog, having been there, been that.

The reason for meeting up with bloggers is his interest in hooking up with the people who communicate with hundreds or thousands of readers daily just by typing on a keyboard. Funny enough, I was told he had to ask his staff what "chuvaness" means.
I said, it means "whatever", and I quote Gilda Cordero Fernando in her article:

Soon it was in Cecile Zamora’s blog. “Better than Inquirer,” someone said. “Everybody reads it.” Since I am a computer illit, it was left to my husband to access the site. So there he is, my old man with a cloud of white hair, hunched over the keyboard, eyebrows knit, trying to figure out where in heavensname “Chuvaness,” this very hip blog, can ever be found.
I told him “chuvaness” meant “Whatever.” But I wasn’t sure so I asked Manny Chaves. Manny said all he knew was what he had overheard at a party.
“Ano ba talaga ang chuva?”
“Pareho ng chever”
“E ano ang chever?”
“Same as chowa.” (Gee, thanks)

(Geez, I just realized I miss Gilda. Must visit her soon.)

To know more about today's discussion, read Ganns Deen and Noemi Dado.

gilda cordero fernando! i just love 'the dust monster'...

the sc bag is calling to me still... you must do a feature on it! haha!

security guards everywhere can't help but stop and stare at the chuva charm hanging from my bag whenever i enter establishments. it gets more attention than my tahitiennes bag charm! =)

ok! i'll write about the bag later, everybody asks about it.

You are indeed better than Inquirer, Ms. Cecile. By the way, I saw you on All Access at Cinema One last night. Pretty!

yes i saw this too last night, you and the Tiu guy were the only ones featured w/ interviews, si Anne Curtis naman yung na-miss out. hehe

with regards naman to politics, i dunno. I've become cynical about it na. Im a registered voter pero I'm having second thoughts of voting in the next elections. Parang wala naman nangyayari.:( Even if the voting system would be automated kaya pa rin nila mandaya. Pera pera lang yan.

I wonder who will be our Obama counterpart (no to Jeo-bama please).

I have read Gilda Cordero Fernando's compilation of short stories The Butcher, The Baker and the Candlestick Maker and A Wilderness of Sweets. I am a fan of how fluid she writes and how vivid the images she creates with her words. Reading that she actually wrote about something current and "hip" (such as blogging and your blog, no less) amused me no end. :)

http://aikcomo.blogspot.com says am not really so sure what the intention of this meeting is. I know its just like any other interview but this is just a campaign in progress me thinks. I have nothing against Sen. Villar but I am just not ready yet for this. This post actually caught me off guard but actually its an edge for him in his campaign strategy if he gets to have majority of the bloggers on his side. We all know how powerful the queen is, perhaps when CHUVANESS says vote for Villar I might end up voting for this man. With power comes great responsibility and the bloggosphere has become the new most powerful media.

definitely the campaign starts now.
my concern as a blogger is to get the young ones and others to get registered first and foremost regardless of who they're voting for.
p.s. I don't know about the "queen" part. we couldn't even win a simple online voting against Flesh Asia Daily, but that's done and over with :)

http://aikcomo.blogspot.com says luv chuvaness wouldnt be chuvaness without you, so take my compliment I rarely do... well the tweeter disaster even the queen gets the boot royally(sometimes) at least we don't post no ass crack to win (LOL i dunno how this would come across but that was way fun to do....compete for something that's just chuva dvah...)

Early this year i went to an entrepreneurial event where senator Villar was one of the speakers. It was the most inspiring speech i have heard, he has so much passion when he speaks about his life and how he got where he is. I didn't want his speech to end. He is a senator that cares for the filipino youth, his speech was towards them, to become an entrepreneur. This might be a third world country but that also is a big advantage as there are lots of opportunities because of this.

This is the first time in the 12 years i am here that i wish i could vote.

that was very cool of him to tap bloggers

is that your sc for lv i see? lovely. can't wait to get mine

that is the SC bag. I'll write about it later :)

In class we were asked for a list of sites that were part of our daily regime. i had wordpress, youtube, plurk, gmail, then chuvaness. then my classmates were like, "does that really exist?" LOL yes it does my dear classmates. yes it does.

Senator Villar, bloggers, and voting

Ms. Chuva,

Wanna bet you and other bloggers will soon be inundated by other candidates' invites who are also interested in "hooking up with people who communicate with hundreds of thousands of readers daily"?--the power of new media nga naman. :) If you do get invited, hope you go so we get some sort of background on these candidates. Not that voters should rely solely on your blog on who to vote for, but at least, you'll give a different perspective from the usual.

And also, knowing you cover these things will be sure to encourage the kids to register and those who are getting jaded and cynical about the whole voting process to still go in there and be counted.

I realize that it's really easy to just throw up our hands and give up every time election comes around because what's the use, right? There's always rampant cheating. But if we don't keep trying to change things, what then? It really ticks me off when I hear or read people saying, they don't see the point of voting because nothing will ever change. It's precisely this attitude that will always keep the country in the muck. It's not enough to pay your taxes, work hard, and try to be as good a citizen as you possibly can. There has to be a concerted effort to change things. And voting--and voting the correct candidates--is the way to do it...Or we can all revolt--that's also a concerted effort--but do we really want to go there?

Managed to interview Senator Villar before and he really does come off as a very down to earth, grassroots kinda guy. But from your quote on the range of topics he talks about...hmmm, parang I heard na that--during the interview! Especially the one about reading komiks. It has a good spin to it though. I can't help wondering though if he's gonna use that story every time he gets interviewed from here on in!

Anyways, thanks for posting this. And sorry for the mini-rant. :)

this bloggers' meet looks interesting ha :)

and whoa, nice bag! ;)

great diversity of topics makes you even more interesting to follow cecile. keep up the good work!

those frosted windows make me want to be home and enjoy a nice cold rainy season, away from perpetually hot and humid singapore.

re: villar -

i am 27 and plan to register to vote for the first time ever (was always out of the country during past elections). so definitely paying more attention to the presidentiables now and i'm glad some of them (like villar) are savvy enough to tap into the blogosphere. i hope this means that not only is the battlefield changing, but that the politicians are beginning to realize they have to change along with it. or am i being too idealistic? :P

I'm not politically astute but Manny Villar is one of the politicians whom you can really see and say as not corrupt. He has everything. He helps without asking for anything in return. He is a perfect example of the rags-to-riches story. And I am totally pissed with his detractors and the so-called politicians who are "protecting" the interests of the nation and are really trying their best to put him down. They are threatened by MV since he is a strong contender for the presidential elections next year. I lost interest in voting and got disheartened by all the promises of these trapos. If he pushes through with his plans in running for the highest position in the country, I will register and vote for him. I haven't voted for years. He might be our nation's version of Obama. :-)

i'm going to HK next week. i'll bring the last one for you

he's my candidate
i think we need an entreprenuer as president..economists and lawyers haven't worked.
he also has his feet on the ground. i cannot stand people who pretend to be one with the poor but has never been one. may as well admit it and be true than make padyak some trike.

He is, for me, the number one candidate on my presidentiables list. Just thinking about the 2010 elections, exhausts me to bits...

We need to pray for our candidates and for the people to VOTE and take accountability for the country. Life is hard but by being apathetic, it makes it even much more challenging.

Me, Cecile, I like him. I liked him ever since the tira-tirang kanin story because it gave me an insight to his character and to his way of thinking, among other things. I think our country needs someone who understands money and poverty first hand to improve our general situation.

He ain't perfect. There are some things he advocates that I'm not exactly a fan of, pero pwede naman mamaya na ang mga yan. Given the major & more pressing issues, I feel like he's the intelligent choice. He's got my vote. I'm registering as an overseas voter pa nga. I have to call the consulate pa and find out how to register & vote from abroad kasi wa ko knows how. Effort, pero oks lang. :)

Anyway, I hope more overseas people will register and vote from abroad din, kung sino man ang kandidato nila. Kahit na mas konti kami outside Pinas, our votes still count diba. :)

what was that story again?

Now is the only time I got to comment! Still in Singapore though, getting fat. I was recording the discussion via qik.com, a live streaming site and I used a Nokia N97 for this. I intend to attend these invites so I get to know the candidates more. Mar Roxas started meeting with bloggers last year then to the ANC Live Forums.

thanks for the tip!
but waaahh! enjoy chicken rice for me!
